SEO-Friendly URLs: How to Name Pages So People Understand Them
Readable slugs, folder structure, parameters and when changing a URL is worth the risk.

A URL is the address of a page. A clear URL helps people understand what they will find before they click, and it appears in search results, shared links and browser history. URLs are a small ranking factor, but readable, stable URLs make a site easier to manage for years.
What a good URL looks like
| Less clear | Clearer |
|---|---|
/index.php?page_id=482 | /services/boiler-repair/ |
/blog/2026/11/02/post-17 | /blog/how-long-does-a-water-heater-last/ |
/Products/Item?ID=AB-77&ref=menu | /hiking-boots/womens-waterproof/ |
- Use words that describe the page, in the language of the page.
- Use lowercase letters and hyphens between words, not underscores or spaces.
- Keep it reasonably short; drop filler words like “and”, “the”, “a” when they add nothing.
- Avoid dates in blog URLs if you plan to update posts; a date makes refreshed content look old.
- Keep a logical folder structure (
/services/,/blog/) that matches your navigation.
Google’s URL structure guidelines recommend simple, descriptive URLs and caution against unnecessary parameters.
Parameters and tracking codes
Parameters like ?sort=price or ?utm_source=newsletter are normal, but they can create many URLs for the same content. Keep them out of internal links where possible, and make sure the page’s canonical tag points to the clean version.
Localized URLs
For different languages, translate the slug too, for example /es-mx/servicios/reparacion-de-calentadores/. Our multilingual SEO guide covers structure and hreflang.
Should you change existing URLs?
Usually not just for cosmetic reasons. Changing a URL means old links and bookmarks must redirect, and Google has to reprocess the page. Change URLs when:
- The current URL is misleading (the page topic changed completely).
- You are restructuring the site or merging pages.
- URLs are unusable (session IDs, random characters) and you can redirect all of them.
When you do, 301-redirect each old URL to its new one and update internal links. See changing URLs without losing traffic.
Common mistakes
- Very long slugs copied from the full article title.
- Mixed case (
/Services/and/services/treated as different URLs). - Repeating keywords:
/plumber-plumbing-plumbers/. - Accented characters handled inconsistently by your platform.
- Changing slugs every time a title is edited.
Set clean URLs when you publish a page, and then leave them alone. Pair them with good titles and a clear site structure.
