Site Structure and Breadcrumbs for Small Websites

Plan shallow, logical sections and add breadcrumbs that match them.

Site structure is how your pages are grouped and connected. A clear structure helps visitors find what they need in a few clicks and helps search engines understand which pages are central. Breadcrumbs show visitors where they are within that structure.

Keep it shallow and logical

For most small sites, every important page should be reachable within about three clicks from the homepage. Group pages the way customers think, not the way your internal departments are organized.

Illustrative structure for a home-services company:

Home
├─ Services
│ ├─ Boiler repair
│ ├─ Water heaters
│ └─ Bathroom installation
├─ Areas we cover
│ ├─ Leeds
│ └─ Bradford
├─ Guides (blog)
│ ├─ Heating
│ └─ Plumbing
├─ About
└─ Contact

Plan your structure

  1. List every page you have and every page you plan.
  2. Group them into a handful of main sections (usually 4–7).
  3. Within each section, decide on subsections only if there are enough pages to justify them.
  4. Make sure each section has an overview page linking to its children.
  5. Reflect the structure in your URLs where practical; see SEO-friendly URLs.

Navigation

  • Main menu with your main sections, using clear labels (“Services”, not “What we do for you”).
  • Footer links to important secondary pages: contact, policies, areas.
  • Contextual links within content; see internal linking.
  • Links as normal HTML so they work without JavaScript.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are a small trail near the top of the page, such as Home › Services › Boiler repair. They help visitors move up a level, especially when they arrive from search on a deep page.

  • Show the path through your structure, not the visitor’s browsing history.
  • Make each level except the current page a link.
  • Add BreadcrumbList structured data that matches the visible trail. Google may show the breadcrumb path in results.
  • Many platforms and themes support breadcrumbs with a setting or plugin.

Blog categories and tags

  • Use a small number of categories matching your main topics.
  • Avoid dozens of tags that each contain one or two posts; they create thin pages.
  • Consider noindexing tag archives if they add no value, while keeping category pages useful with short introductions.

Signs your structure needs work

  • Important pages appear low in Search Console’s internal links report.
  • Visitors use site search for things that should be in the menu.
  • Several pages compete for the same topic.
  • The menu has grown to 15+ items.
