Most searches for local services and many product searches happen on phones. Google primarily uses the mobile version of your pages for indexing and ranking, so a site that works well on desktop but poorly on mobile is at a disadvantage. This checklist covers what to check.
Mobile-first indexing in plain English
Google crawls and evaluates the mobile version of your site. If content, links, images or structured data are missing on mobile, Google may not see them at all. Google’s mobile site and mobile-first indexing best practices explain the details.
Content parity
- The same main text appears on mobile as on desktop (it can be in tabs or accordions).
- The same headings, images with alt text and important internal links.
- The same structured data and meta tags (title, description, robots, canonical).
- No “lite” mobile version that drops sections.
Layout and readability
- Responsive design that adapts to the screen, with a viewport meta tag.
- Body text at least around 16px, with comfortable line length and spacing.
- Tap targets (buttons, links) large enough and spaced so people do not tap the wrong one.
- No horizontal scrolling; tables scroll inside their own container if needed.
- Phone numbers and addresses tappable to call or open maps.
Speed on real phones
Mobile visitors often have slower connections and devices. Check Core Web Vitals for mobile specifically, compress images, and remove unnecessary scripts and heavy animations.
Pop-ups and interstitials
Full-screen pop-ups that cover the content right after someone arrives from search frustrate visitors. Google’s page experience guidance discourages intrusive interstitials. Acceptable: legally required cookie or age notices, and small banners that use a reasonable part of the screen. Avoid: newsletter pop-ups that block the page immediately, or ads that must be dismissed before reading.
Forms and checkout
- Short forms with the right keyboard types (email, phone, number).
- Autofill support and clear error messages.
- Mobile-friendly payment options where your platform supports them.
How to test
- Open your key pages on your own phone, on mobile data, not only Wi-Fi.
- Use Chrome DevTools device mode to check several screen sizes.
- Run PageSpeed Insights for mobile results.
- Use URL Inspection → Test live URL in Search Console and view the screenshot Google renders.
- Ask someone unfamiliar with the site to complete a task (find a price, book a service) on their phone and watch where they struggle.
Quick checklist
- Same content and links on mobile as desktop.
- Readable text without zooming.
- Comfortable tap targets.
- No intrusive pop-ups on arrival.
- Fast loading on mobile data.
- Tap-to-call and maps links.
- Forms easy to complete.
If you serve local customers, combine this with a well-maintained Google Business Profile; many mobile searchers contact you directly from there.
