Product Page SEO for Small Online Stores
Unique descriptions, variants, reviews, Product markup and what to do when items sell out.
By the Seozumi editorial team · · about 5 min read

Product pages are where search traffic turns into sales, yet many small stores use the manufacturer’s description, a generic title and a single photo. Small, careful improvements can make your pages more useful to shoppers and easier for Google to understand.
Write unique, useful descriptions
Copying the manufacturer’s text means your page says exactly what dozens of other shops say. Write your own description that answers what a buyer wants to know:
- Who it is for and what problem it solves.
- Key specifications in a scannable list: size, materials, compatibility, care.
- What is in the box and what is not.
- Honest limitations (“not suitable for dishwashers”).
- Shipping, returns and warranty specifics, or a clear link to them.
Titles and headings
Use the product name with the most important distinguishing attributes: brand, model, key feature, size or color where shoppers search for it. Example: “Example Trail Women’s Waterproof Hiking Boots — Brown, Wide Fit”. See writing title tags.
Images
- Several real photos from different angles, plus in-use and scale shots.
- Descriptive alt text and compressed files; see image SEO.
- High-resolution images help eligibility for Google Shopping and image results.
Variants
If a product comes in sizes or colors, usually keep one page with a variant selector rather than near-identical pages for every option. If a variant is searched for on its own (for example a distinct color that people look for by name), it can have its own URL, with clear differences and its own images. Make sure variant URLs created by parameters point a canonical tag to the main version when they are duplicates.
Structured data
Add Product markup with name, image, description, brand, and an Offer with price, currency and availability. Only include review ratings if they come from genuine customer reviews shown on the page. Google’s product structured data documentation lists requirements. Many platforms add this automatically; check with the Rich Results Test before adding duplicates. Our structured data guide covers testing.
Category pages
- Add a short, helpful intro explaining the range and how to choose.
- Use clear filters, but avoid letting every filter combination become an indexable URL.
- Link to buying guides that answer comparison questions.
Out-of-stock and discontinued products
| Situation | Recommended handling |
|---|---|
| Temporarily out of stock | Keep the page live, show availability clearly, offer back-in-stock alerts and alternatives. |
| Permanently discontinued, with a replacement | 301-redirect to the replacement or closest equivalent. |
| Discontinued, no equivalent | Return 404/410, or keep a page explaining it is discontinued with alternatives if it still gets useful traffic. |
Reviews
Genuine reviews help buyers and add fresh, specific content. Ask after delivery, display them on the page, and never write or buy fake reviews.
Quick checklist
- Unique description and title.
- Multiple compressed photos with alt text.
- Price, availability and shipping info visible.
- Product markup tested.
- Variants handled without duplicates.
- Clear plan for out-of-stock items.
