You do not need a paid agency to find the most common SEO problems on a small website. This one-afternoon audit uses free tools and covers the checks that most often explain why a site is not getting search traffic. Note what you find; fixing comes afterwards.

Tools you need

  • Google Search Console (verified for your site).
  • PageSpeed Insights.
  • Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Your browser’s “view source”.
  • Optionally, a free crawler or site-audit tool for small sites.

1. Indexing (30 minutes)

  1. Search Console → Pages: how many pages are indexed vs not indexed? Read the reasons.
  2. URL Inspection on the homepage and two key pages: indexed? Which canonical did Google choose?
  3. Open /robots.txt: anything blocking important sections? See robots.txt explained.
  4. Open /sitemap.xml: does it exist, list only real pages and appear in Search Console?

Our indexing checklist explains each status.

2. Technical basics (45 minutes)

  1. Does every version (http, https, www, non-www) redirect to one preferred version?
  2. Do key pages return 200 and have self-referencing canonicals? See canonical tags.
  3. Search Console → Core Web Vitals and PageSpeed Insights for mobile: any “Poor” groups?
  4. Search Console → Pages: any 404s or server errors on important URLs? See fixing 404 errors.
  5. Open the site on your phone: readable, tappable, no intrusive pop-ups?

3. On-page elements (45 minutes)

  1. Unique, descriptive title and meta description on each key page? See titles and descriptions.
  2. One clear H1 and logical headings? See heading structure.
  3. Images compressed with alt text?
  4. Important pages linked from navigation and from related content?
  5. Structured data valid in the Rich Results Test?

4. Content (45 minutes)

  1. Does each core service or product have its own useful page?
  2. Are there near-duplicate or thin pages that should be merged?
  3. Are facts, prices and hours current?
  4. Does Search Console show queries you rank for but do not answer well?
  5. Does the site show who is behind it and how to contact you? See trust signals.

5. Local (if relevant, 30 minutes)

  1. Google Business Profile complete, verified and accurate?
  2. Name, address and phone identical on the site and the profile?
  3. Recent reviews answered?
