SEO for JavaScript Websites: What Non-Developers Should Check

Check that content, links and metadata exist in rendered HTML.

By the Seozumi editorial team · · about 5 min read

Many modern websites rely on JavaScript to show content. Google can render JavaScript, but rendering may be delayed, and mistakes can hide content or links from search engines. You do not need to code to check the basics.

How Google handles JavaScript

Google crawls the HTML, then renders the page with a browser to run JavaScript, then indexes the result. Google’s JavaScript SEO basics explains the process. Other search engines and AI crawlers may render less JavaScript, so server-rendered content is safer.

Five checks

  1. Content: use URL Inspection → Test live URL → View tested page → HTML. Is your main text there?
  2. Links: are navigation and internal links normal <a href> links? Buttons with click handlers are not followed as links.
  3. Metadata: is the title, meta description and canonical in the rendered HTML, and correct for each page?
  4. URLs: does each page have its own URL that loads directly, without relying on # fragments?
  5. Status codes: do missing pages return a real 404 instead of a “not found” message with status 200?

Common problems

  • Content loaded only after a click, scroll or login.
  • Every page sharing the same title because it is set once for the whole app.
  • Important resources blocked in robots.txt; see robots.txt explained.
  • Hash-based URLs like /#/services that search engines treat as one page.
  • Slow scripts delaying content; see Core Web Vitals.

Better options

  • Server-side rendering or static generation for important pages, so content is in the initial HTML.
  • Platforms and frameworks that support per-page metadata.
  • Ask your developer whether critical pages are pre-rendered.

Questions to ask your developer

  • Is page content present in the HTML before JavaScript runs?
  • Does each route set its own title, description and canonical?
  • Do invalid URLs return a 404 status?
  • Are internal links standard anchor tags?
