SEO for Early-Stage SaaS: Where to Start

Use-case pages, honest comparisons, docs and templates for a young software product.

By the Seozumi editorial team · · about 5 min read

Early-stage software companies often start SEO by writing generic blog posts about their industry. That rarely brings customers. A better starting point is to make sure people searching for the problem you solve, the use cases you serve and the alternatives they compare can find a clear, honest answer on your site.

Start with product and use-case pages

  • A clear homepage stating what the product does and for whom, in plain words.
  • One page per main feature, explaining the problem it solves with screenshots.
  • Use-case or audience pages (“Invoicing for freelance designers”) when needs genuinely differ.
  • Integration pages for tools you actually integrate with, describing what the integration does.
  • A pricing page with real plans and limits.

Honest comparison content

People searching “[competitor] alternatives” or “X vs Y” are close to a decision. You can publish comparison pages, but keep them fair:

  • Base claims on publicly verifiable information and date the comparison.
  • Acknowledge where competitors are a better fit.
  • Update when competitors change features or pricing.

Documentation and help content

Public, crawlable help articles answer how-to questions from existing users and prospects evaluating the product. Use clear titles matching the task (“How to set up recurring invoices”), steps, screenshots and links to related articles. Keep docs indexable unless they contain sensitive information.

Templates and free tools

Templates, calculators and checklists related to your product (an invoice template for invoicing software, for example) can attract relevant visitors and links. Make them genuinely useful without requiring sign-up, and connect them naturally to the product.

Blog content that supports the product

Choose topics your buyers search for before and during evaluation, not just industry news. Use the approach in how to find SEO blog topics and free keyword research.

Technical basics for SaaS sites

  • Keep the marketing site crawlable and fast; avoid client-only rendering for important pages.
  • Exclude login, app and account areas from the sitemap and indexing.
  • Use structured data such as Organization and SoftwareApplication where accurate.
  • Avoid launching hundreds of thin programmatic pages; Google’s spam policies cover scaled content abuse.

Measure what matters

Track sign-ups, trials and demos from organic landing pages, not just traffic. See measuring SEO results. Early on, impressions for product and use-case terms are a good leading signal.

A first-90-days plan

  1. Fix indexing and technical basics.
  2. Publish or improve homepage, feature, pricing and key use-case pages.
  3. Publish two or three honest comparison pages.
  4. Make help docs public and well titled.
  5. Add one useful template or tool.
  6. Publish supporting articles on a steady cadence.
